Selous Metallurgical Complex
Processing
The processing facilities comprise a mill and concentrator,
a smelter and converter, a base metal refinery and an analytical
and control laboratory. The site layout allows for a future
cost-effective expansion of capacity. The metallurgical operations
are now referred to as the Selous Metallurgical Complex ("SMC")
and combined with the Ngezi Platinum Mine form the Ngezi/SMC
Project.
The flowsheet is comparable to South African platinum ore
processing operations. The process entails two-stage milling
and flotation, yielding a concentrate that is dried before
smelting in a submerged arc furnace to produce a green matte
containing sulphides and PGMs. The green matte then undergoes
conversion to reduce iron and sulphur, to produce a granulated
white matte.
The Ngezi/SMC Project does not utilise the base metal refinery
("BMR") which will remain on care and maintenance. White matte
will be sold to Impala Refining Services Limited.
